USING SOLVER IN EXCEL
Create a high-level plan for getting WC2026 fans from 8 hub locations (Chicago, Minneapolis,
Omaha, Des Moines, Wichita, Tulsa, Little Rock and St. Louis) to 3 locations near (but outside)
the KC area (Lawrence, KCI-Platte City, Blue Springs). The cost per person data is shown
below in the table (by source to KC location). Your goal is to minimize the overall cost of the fan
distribution plan.
Each hub has a total amount of traffic that must be accommodated, and these fans have been
assessed a 'spend' factor, an indication of how much money they will likely spend at the various
locations in and around KC while they are attending the World Cup.
Each KC-area location has a maximum amount of traffic it can be 'sent'. In your solution, make
sure that is not exceeded, but also make sure at least 60% of that maximum amount of traffic
(fans) is sent to each location.
Other requirements in your strategic plan for the fans:
a) No more than 5000 fans can be sent from any one hub to any one KC-area location. This
considers all the combinations of hubs and the KC-locations.
b) The weighted average of the fans 'spend factor' arriving at each of the three KC-area
locations must be greater than or equal to 4.95.
c) Consider each hub's most costly distribution path - the total number of fans (traffic) sent
combined along those 8 paths cannot exceed 9500 fans. What is "most costly distribution
path" - for instance, for CHIC, it is Lawrence.
d) Only integer decision variables.
