Botswana will auction hunting licences for 70 elephants across seven regions on Friday, the first such change since President Mokgweetsi Masisi removed a five-year moratorium on big game hunting in May. Botswana, home to the world's largest elephant population and nearly one-third of Africa's herd, removed a shooting prohibition in May 2019, citing an increase in the elephant population that was threatening farmers' livelihoods. Government Officials claim that hunting is required to reduce conflict between animals and humans, particularly among farmers whose crops and infrastructure have been destroyed by elephants moving outside of their feeding zones. The licences would be for controlled hunting zones, according to a Department of National Parks and Wildlife spokesperson, and the auction would be open only to Botswana-based enterprises. Botswana, along with its neighbours Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, and South Africa, has re-examined conservation laws in recent years to try to strike a balance between the need to protect endangered species like elephants, rhinos, and buffalo from poaching while also managing the threat they pose as they encroach on human habitation. A resumption in hunting, to reduce the impact of elephants on people and crops, proved controversial. "Hunting elephants may not be a standard tool of sustainable use of natural resources, or the best method of alleviating the problem of human-wildlife conflict," said Neil Fitt, former chief executive of the Kalahari Conservation Club (KCC). A leading wildlife charity, the Born Free Foundation, urged Botswana to abandon any return to trophy hunting.
