CASE SCENARIO: Covid-19 and Ethical Implications

Joe Exotic, the famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) sideshow entrepreneur and reality star, is in the midst of a thorny dilemma. Bobo, one of Joes tigers, started sneezing and running a high fever. Joe tested Bobo and discovered he was infected with a rare mutation of Covid-19. It can be easily passed from species to species. A long-time employee of Joes, Marty Busby, was Bobos primary trainer. Marty had left for a two-week vacation in Cancun a few days before the tiger tested positive. Joe called Marty in Cancun and told him he should be tested due to his recent exposure. Marty got a test that day and came up positive for Covid-19. He called Joe that day with the bad news.

Joe is worried about his business, as he employs 20 trainers and sideshow workers and brings in revenues of $100,000 a month. He is concerned that bad publicity from the Covid-19 outbreak at his sideshow could cut down on these revenues and force him to lay his employees off. There are also concerns that if he keeps the outbreak a secret, visitors to his tiger shows might be infected. Joe is now pondering three courses of action: 1). Keep the outbreak a secret so that he can continue to make his usual income from the sideshow and take his chances with infecting customers, other animals and workers. 2). Call a meeting of employees to let them know about Bobo and Martys infections and put up signs informing customers about the Covid outbreak, risking the loss of both employees and customer patronage, but giving both groups the knowledge they needed to make informed decisions. 3). Close the sideshow down, temporarily laying off workers, risking his business, and disappointing some customers, but knowing that he would be taking the safest possible course of action.

What are the ethical implications involved with Joe and the Covid diagnoses? From the perspective of the principles-based approach and the consequences-based approach, how would you analyze the ethics of each of the three options above? Be specific.
