Local Dog Attacked by Bear

The Fremont County Sheriff's Department is investigating a report of a dog being attacked by a bear. The facts shape up like this:

• There have been several reports of bear sightings in the area.
• A dog suffered moderately severe wounds and scratches.
• The dog was attacked the evening of Friday February 19.
• The dog was attacked on the 100 block of Cheswold Lane in Mifflintown.
• The veterinarian treating the dog reported the injuries to authorities on Tuesday.
• The dog is a three-year-old German Shephard named Wilhelm.
• The dog will recover, but is missing his right ear flap and half of his tail had to be amputated. A tendon in his right front leg was shattered. Wilhelm will limp for the rest of his life.
