Background

This unit introduces students to the practical application of the theory of constraints. They will elucidate how

the flow from one unit to another contributes to the organization's overall success. Consequently, students

can estimate the contributions of different units and identify underperforming ones using predefined

objective measures. From the perspective of the theory of constraints, underperforming units or those not

making significant contributions may be improved or completely transformed. This could involve

transitioning from manual operations to automation to enhance speed or efficiency, leading to either a one$-$

time improvement for weak links or continuous improvement for units or products.

Activity

Students are to map out the processes in an organization where they are carrying out a project. They will

define the departments or units that make up the organization, and asses the contributions of the units to

determine three units that are candidates for improvement or modification. They must explain how they

arrived at their decisions and ensure that they represent the initial state and the final state in the Process

model that they will present in the class.
