News Literacy - What is Newsworthy? Activity 1 Cracking the Big 4 Directions - Analyze a series of four pairs of hypothetical events and determine which of each pair of events is more newsworthy, then determine why. EXAMPLE 1: Tornado hits suburb this morning A severe tornado struck the suburb of Chester two hours ago. The storm carried winds of up to 130 mph. There is one reported fatality and several people injured. At least seven homes were destroyed. Mayor laying plans to get re-elected Tor announced his bid for re-election to a second four-year term yesterday. This was an expected move, though some people had speculated that he would not run due to ongoing health issues. The campaign raised more funding from two major donors hours after the announcement. ASSESS - Which event is more newsworthy? Why? EXAMPLE 2: Dog bites man A neighborhood dog bit a jogger yesterday. The dog was a "Labull," a Labrador retriever and Pitbull/Terrier mix. The jogger only had tiny marks and decided not to call animal control or press charges. Man bites dog A man eating a sandwich at a local park bit a dog when it got close to the man's lunch yesterday.
