Vignette # 2
The data for this vignette has already been entered in an SPSS file in the lab folder, LabSkills3.sav.
You are starting an on-line business that expects to consult with new clients on how to best go about constructing their mobile apps. Your investors have suggested that its time for you to start advertising for qualified employees; however, you expect an initial payroll that can
support only 10-to-20 employees. Your investors have suggested that you may receive applications from as many as 1,000 to 3,000 individuals. There is no conceivable way you can interview that number of applicants for only 10-to-20 employment positions. So you decide to introduce a questionnaire as part of your on-line recruitment questionnaire. One of your expectations is that any appropriate applicant should be able to answer a questionnaire about general best practices in mobile apps. But you believe that this would not be an indicator of the best candidates; it would only be an indication of who is informed more vs. less about best practices. One of your primary concerns is that being highly informed about best practices may not be a good predictor of the best hires. Your intuition suggests that personal integrity would be a stronger predictor of a good employee than his/her level of prior knowledge would be.
Fortunately, one of your college friends started a mobile app company two years previous and collected data on all his hired employees. The data included employee responses to questionnaires regarding certain personal characteristics: knowledge of best practices, integrity, and career motivation. The data also included supervisors quarterly assessments of the work behaviors of these employees. The data has been consolidated such that, for each employee, the dimensions of knowledge, integrity, motivation, and work behavior are each represented by a single, summary coefficient. In other words, each employee has four scores; there is one score for each of the measured dimensions. High scores indicate high knowledge, high integrity, high motivation, and commendable work behaviors. Each of the scored dimensions is scaled such that 100 is the maximum score and 0 is the minimum score. There are 25 employees in the data set.
You have asked your friend if you can analyze the data and, in return, have offered to provide free consultation regarding your findings. Your main purpose is to find out whether any of the measured employee characteristics are good predictors of their work behaviors.
Before analyzing the data, we should take a moment to understand that there are many approaches to assessing this question of prediction. We have studied only one of these in our course on Introductory Statistics. We have studied simple regression where one predictor predicts one outcome (a.k.a. one IV predicts one DV). So our best approach right now, at this stage of our understanding, is to implement separate simple-regressions.
In your created Word document, answer the following questions (Identify each answer as SPSS-7, SPSS-8, etc.)
SPSS-7: You will need to execute three separate simple-regressions: one for knowledge, one for integrity, and one for motivation, with each of these predictors separately predicting the same outcome, work behavior. As a general start point, identify the null and the alternative hypothesis for each of these regressions.
SPSS-8: Execute the three separate analyses to determine which may offer the best prediction of work behaviors. Copy the output of the analyses into your Word document.
SPSS-9: Interpret the results, suggest whether you would reject the null hypothesis or not. Report the results in an appropriate manner.
SPSS-10: Make a judgment about which of the three different personal characteristics is the best predictor of work behavior. Which is best? Which coefficient in the results helps you make this decision? Explain your judgement.
