CIVE 485- COURSE PROJECT
A Road Project in a Rural Area
STATEMENT
In this course, we are using a theoretical road project in a rural area. It will enhance your engineering sense and judgment as well as your presentation skills in both oral and written formats. The project is about paving a 20-kilometer? length with an 8-meter width of asphalt in one layer. Your team is responsible for providing the cost part of the project (what will be the total cost of the project)! Also, you need to suggest to the company (to bid or not to bid) based on the calculations and available information. You should use the Excel to present the calculations.
Note: To complete your job professionally, you must ask and check with the owner of the project (Dr. W. Beitelmal) for any questions that you have. Don't assume without asking!
INSTRUCTIONS
As you know, for developing the details of measurement and calculations of the quantities, you need the drawings of the project, as well as the design data. For this project, you must consider only the following activities and tests to successfully finish the estimating for your project:
Cleaning the path.
Backfilling material.
Compact base course material.
Compact asphaltic concrete.
MCO; and
Shoulders
Your team must provide the following deliverables a report in (5-8 pages), as well as all extra files (Excel showing your calculations. The report should include:
Assumptions made by the estimating team.
Detailed calculation for the quantities for the needed work (activities)
Detailed calculation for the unit price for the activities.
One summary table (BOQ) for the project shows the quantities, unit price, and total cost of the project.
Summary sheet showing the activities (items), each item's total cost, overhead and profit, and the total bid price!
RESOURCES PROVIDED
Typical cross-section for the road
Road design data (April 8th)
Company overhead and profit minimum percentage.
Later, the owner's typical prices for the activities will be provided.

THE TYPICAL CROSS-SECTION
Note: To simplify the calculations, assume the cross-section is fixed throughout the road.
COMPANY OVERHEAD AND PROFIT MINIMUM PERCENTAGE
Based on the company history for similar projects, the company put a minimum acceptable overhead and profit is 25%. By knowing the acceptable range of bids, you should suggest to your company based on
your calculation to be or not to bid!
