We have now started studying some shortcuts to finding derivatives including the power rule, product and quotient rules, and the chain rule. Even though these rules make it easier to calculate a derivative, we still want to remember the fundamental definition from last week. Why is it important to remember the definition of the derivative, even after learning all of the shortcuts? What applications might result from any of the shortcut rules for differentiation?
