1. Read Chapter 10 in the eText that describes the role and functions of human resource management.

2. Read the following paragraph about the personnel needs of ABC Company:

ABC Company has hired you like the Human Resource Manager. Though the company has experienced sales growth in each of the last four years, a hiring freeze has been in place. That freeze has been lifted and it is clear that some departments are understaffed.

3. In one paragraph, describe the plan and activities you will use to determine the personnel needs of ABC Company.

Case Study 2: Motivational Strategies for ABC Company

Read Chapter 8 in the eText that addresses models and concepts of employee motivation, providing strategies and techniques for improving motivation.

Employee motivation and job satisfaction levels at ABC Company are suffering.

For each of the three Scenariosbelow related to ABC Company, write a three to four sentence paragraph describing a theory and which strategies and techniques you would use and how you would implement them for the individuals described.

Scenario 1:

A manager, approaching retirement, is very set in his ways. A very talented and knowledgeable individual, this person tends to be tough on his employees; this results in a department with low morale.

Scenario 2:

A 5-year employee has performed at a high level. Her manager has expressed concern that she may be getting bored and losing interest in her job.

Scenario 3:

A sales team is beginning to show a lack of intensity and this is reflected in their performance. While there hasnt been a dramatic drop in sales, the rate of growth has significantly slowed and customer complaints are increasing.
