WEEK 1 As this is the first lab in analytical chemistry, most of the procedures will be laid out for you in explicit detail. However, as you progress through the semester there will be less detail as your skills develop. Solution Preparation 1. Preparation and standardization of 0.1M carbonate free NaOH 2. Make the 50% (w/v) solution of NaOH using 15g NaOH pellets in 30ml of room temperature deionized water. Use the top loading balance, a graduated cylinder and a beaker. Do not weigh out the NaOH until you are ready to dissolve it. 3. MIX WELL - be careful - this solution gets very warm 4. Filter this 50% (w/v)NaOH solution, if necessary, by gravity using a coarse/fast filter paper (Whatman 4) and a glass funnel. Collect about 15 - 20 ml. (Filtration is ONLY NECESSARY if NaOH is not completely dissolved) 5. Take 8 ml of the filtered solution and dilute up to 1 L with the boiled, cooled carbonate free water. Mix well
