This assignment asks you to prepare and deliver a presentation on Flex Time and Telecommuting for employees at Columbus Custom Carpentry. You will be submitting your presentation by video along with your power point slides with presentation notes.
Your presentation should have 5 parts.
Your audience is the President of Columbus Custom Carpentry.
1. Introduction
In your introduction you will introduce yourself and explain that your presentation is a proposal for making some jobs in the Administrative/Corporate and Marketing business units either flexible scheduled and/or telecommuting.
2. Summary Description of Flexible Scheduling, Telecommuting and Hybrid Options
From your introduction you will want to transition to a brief description of what flexible scheduling and telecommuting is for purposes of your presentation. You want to make sure your audience is clear about what you mean.
3. Pros and Cons of Flexible Scheduling & Telecommuting
After discussing what flex scheduling and telecommuting is, explain the pros and cons of each of the options. You should have at least 2 pros and 2 cons
4. Administrative/Corporate and Marketing Jobs That Are Appropriate for Flexible Scheduling and/or Telecommuting
There are 14 jobs that fall under Administrative/Corporate and Marketing Units See Job Descriptions Tab in the Excel Spreadsheet provided in Week 4. Consider which jobs you believe are appropriate for Flex Scheduling, Telecommuting or a hybrid.
As you consider which jobs you will recommend, think practically Can this job really be done from home? Is it preferable for the company to have the work performed on-site or at specific times? How will flexible scheduling/telecommuting impact other related work/jobs?
Youll want to identify each job clearly, perhaps include a brief job description and thoroughly explain why you believe the job is appropriate for the new work schedule or location.
Some jobs in these units are clearly not suitable for flexible scheduling or telecommuting. Example custodians cannot do their job from home, and it is arguable whether you want them cleaning offices/plant space whenever they want.
While you will want to focus and be specific about the jobs you ARE recommending for Flex Scheduling or Telecommuting, be sure to briefly explain why you believe the other jobs must remain on site and performed during normal business hours. Perhaps some of these jobs can be grouped together based on the reasons you are not including them for Flex Scheduling or Telecommuting.
5. Pay and Benefits for Employees in Flexible or Telecommuting Jobs
Conclude your presentation with a discussion of whether you recommend Columbus Carpentry modify the pay and/or benefits for the jobs you have recommended for flexible schedules or working from home. Be specific about which jobs, if any, and what modifications you propose. IF you are not going to recommend any modifications to pay and benefits, explain why.
Some things to think about ---
Are the workers in these jobs working the same number of hours and producing the same amount of work they would perform if they worked on-site and/or during normal business hours?
If the worker no longer has to devote any of their pay toward commuting to work (gas/car/public transportation) are they in essence getting paid more than workers who work on site and have that expense?
How should Columbus Carpentry address holiday or vacation pay for jobs that would not normally be scheduled to work on that day --- see your textbooks discussion of Thanksgiving as an example.
This list of considerations is not exclusive there may be many more things to consider. This list is meant only to inspire your analysis.
