Week 6: In class this week we've learned about chi squared tests, which allow us answer more complicated problems with categorical data. In this week's exercise, we will try to find out the relationship (more specifically dependency) between flight carrier and origin airport. The Oregon flight data includes several airports in Oregon, including PDX, EUG and several others. ** Open your data in Excel (XLStat Free even better) and answer the following in complete sentences. As always on these projects, your work must be your own (including software output you ran yourself). 1) Create a contingency table (in XLStat Free: Tests on contingency tables, then choose "Qualitative Variables." Your row variable will be ORIGIN and your Column variable will be OP_UNIQUE CARRIER. Click OK). Copy (don't screenshot) this table into your report. 2) What are the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis for a test of independence based on this table? For our purposes, we'll pretend this data set is a random sample of all recent flights out of Oregon. 3) Calculate this test statistic, and report your p-value. You may calculate this "by hand", but it will be much faster and easier in to scroll down and look at the chi squared statistic and p-value XLStat has already calculated for you. 4) What does this p-value tell you about flight carrier and origin airport, in everyday language. 5) Give an example of a different test of independence we could perform using this data
