WEEK TWO SUNDAY POST - WHY DID ENRON FAIL? A CORP GOVERNANCE MASTERPIECE - OR DISASTER
Class,
One of the learning modules this week is the infamous story of Enronportrayed in the documentary, "The Smartest Guys in the Room". Provide a strong paragraph or two addressing the following:
There are several people in the film who had positions of power within Enron and still allowed the deception to continue. Of all the cast of characters, whichonedo you think was most at fault for the Enronscandal - be specific.
Why do you think the scandal was able to grow as large as it did?
In 2001, when Enronfiled for the largest bankruptcy in corporate history at the time, it was the seventh largest business in the country with $63.4 billion in assets. How is it possible that a company this large became such a scandal? Do you think there are still corporations like Enrontoday where financials are overblown? Explain.
Lastly, where are the main characters today: Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling, SharonWatkins,Andy Fastow, and Lou Pai?
A little note of Jasso history - I lived and breathed the scandal and the eventual Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 during my dissertation time in PHD school. I also have an original Enron corporate cup on my desk in my office as a little reminder about corporate fraud. Strong and steady.
