Welcome to MAT 142! To begin, please take some time to introduce yourself and discuss your connection to the course with your peers. You will share an initial post for this discussion by Thursday, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, and respond to at least two peers by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
In this post, we invite you to introduce yourself to your classmates and reflect on your experience with the self-assessmentin Mobius. In your initial post, discuss which topics in algebra you may need to revisit based on the self-assessment.
Mindset refers to the way we perceive our abilities and approach challenges. It can significantly influence our learning experiences, including mathematics. A growth mindset, popularized by the work of psychologists like Carol Dweck and Jo Boaler, emphasizes the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, practice, and persistence.
Consider the following questions in your initial post:
Note: You are not required to respond to all four questions. Choose the questions that resonate with you the most and provide thoughtful reflections and insights in your post.
- Based on the self-assessment in Mobius, which topics in algebra do you feel you may need to revisit or strengthen? How do you plan to address these areas of improvement?
- Reflect on how your mindset affects your approach to learning mathematics. How does having a growth mindset influence your motivation, confidence, and willingness to tackle challenging concepts or problems?
- Share any specific strategies you plan to implement to enhance your understanding of the identified areas for improvement. How do you plan to leverage resources, such as academic support or online materials, to support your learning?
- Discuss the role of self-assessment in your math learning journey. How does it contribute to your overall project readiness and learning experience? How can you use the self-assessment results to set goals and track your progress throughout the course?
FIRST PEER RESPONSE
I am a student named Muhammad, and I would be delighted to start this course with you all. I am a Pakistani born and living in the United States where I am undertaking my degree in software engineering at SNHU. I have never been averse to technology and computers and am excited to improve my math's performance as it is a key to programming, data analysis, and solving logical problems.
I understood that I still must reconsider several issues, in particular, linear equations, fractions, and exponents. I could remember certain ideas, but I have found that I frequently had made minor errors in simplifying an expression or in solving a multi-step problem. To deal with these areas I will be employing SNHU online tutoring and khan academy and other YouTube tutorials to update my knowledge. I would also adopt a routine of practicing a couple of problems daily.
Speaking of the mindset, I am a firm believer in such a concept as the growth mindset the capability of upgrading our capabilities with time, efforts, and perseverance. Math can be daunting at times, but I have learned that it is normal to make mistakes in the process of learning. With a positive attitude and patience, I will be able to use adversities as a step toward improvement.
The self-evaluation was quite an eye-opener that learning is ongoing. It made me realize my position and make certain objectives to develop my confidence in algebra. My primary objective in this term is to learn to solve problems step-by-step and enhance my basic math knowledge to be able to use it in the further courses.
I would be happy to learn with you all and assist one another in this course.
SECOND PEER RESPONSE
Greetings class,
My name is Kevin, I am 36 years old from Wilmington, Delaware. I am currently attending SNHU to receive my associates in computer science. I always found an interest in technology, computers and more. I plan to take what I learn and create and develop mobile apps and websites. In my spare time outside of school and work I enjoy spending time with my wife and our 4 children, whether it be road trips, picnics, or amusement parks. Now my experience with the self assesment has showed me that I really need to refresh and relearn everything about algebra and math in general. Being out of school for so long I've forgotten how to do alot of the things that were on the test. I mean it all looked like a foreign language lol, but none the less I will not allow this to slow me down. I will use whatever online resources that's available to us students, along with youtube university. I will reach out to our instructor as well as utilize the online tutoring that's available. I know that we will all do well in this course as long as we use the resources that are available to us. Good luck all.
