The sequence of events that connects the action potential (excitation) of the muscle cell membrane (the
sarcolemma) to muscular contraction is known as excitation-contraction coupling (E-C). Although the
myocardium's E-C coupling resembles that of skeletal and smooth muscle in many ways, there are also
significant differences.
