Question:
(what did you find interesting about what I wrote or maybe anything you learned)?
Zirin said "if sports glamorize war- is that a form of propaganda?." This question powerfully resonated with me because I never really thought about the military presence that was in football. They used the already existing demographic of the viewers of NFL football to push for more people to join the army. However, I do not believe that joining was glamorized. Football is a sport that has a viewer demographic of mostly men which was the target audience for the army. Think about it, when was the last time you saw an advertisement for the army on a fashion network? I believe that it is because the army used football to recruit people that share similar values. I also do not believe that it was a form of propaganda. They used football because they share similar values of resilience and teamwork to defeat opposition. Football is extremely popular in American culture. There are a lot more viewers who tune in to watch a football game compared to a swim meet. They could have targeted football because it was simply a larger demographic of people viewing it at one time.
