While some observers claim that this clustering behavior is due, in part, to CEOs managing their reputation in financial markets, the decision has been heavily criticized as being the standard, relatively easy response to challenges brought about by the economic conditions and developments in technology and global competition. As a student in strategic management, perhaps also as a practitioner: what do you think of this recent decision by company leaders to cut jobs and adopt downsizing strategies? Are there better ways to manage the needs of the workforce and those of the organization that make sparing use of job cuts?
