Knowing about healthcare providers is just as important as properly coding and billing gastrointestinal disease related claims. These conditions and/or diseases may require more than one physician/medical team to provide the proper medical care. These providers can also help manage long term also known as chronic problems. We previously mentioned the importance of coding and billing, adding that doctors must also be providing medical care for what they are licensed to do.
Example 1: A gastroenterologist cannot provide services for heart issues. They can certainly refer the patient to a cardiologist if they find a significant problem but not provide the care they are not licensed to do so.
Example2: A Primary care physician cannot provide mental counseling. The patient primary reason was a knee issue in the course of the visit, there is a concern of anxiety/depression. The doctor cannot treat this issue but can refer the patient for psychologist/physiatrist for counseling and treatment.
I work in the healthcare industry and have seen many examples of these charges that we need to refer back to coding to review the documented record for correct provider and/or diagnosis to be included in the claim.
It is always recommended to double and triple check the charges before billing out.
