What is Critical Thinking
Critical thinking may be defined as the process by which we test claims and arguments and determine which have merit and which do not (Ruggiero 2004 as cited in Kossen 2013, Part 3, p.262)
Why is critical thinking important to our study?
Critical thinking helps us understand the world in which we live and how we live. It helps us to predict what might happen in the future and therefore, make wiser decisions. In academia, you will be required to bring a critical approach to what you read, what you write, what you hear and what you say. You will be expected to:
- Examine arguments, evidence and conclusions
- Evaluate other peoples reasoning and evidence using criteria to guide you
As Kossen (2013) notes, just because a journal article or book is in your library, doesnt mean that you un-critically accept its argument. Its purpose is to provide a published opinion that informs you and allows you to make up your own mind in relation to your particular set of circumstances.
