"What is something that you believe could be improved or managed using a database? Something I believe can be managed using a database is with personal finances. A database can help organize all the spending, the money in and out of our personal accounts. It really is a tedious thing to be tracking alone.
Imagine that someone could design a database to help you manage or improve a problem, what would that problem be?
A potential problem I see transactions being put into different categories due to the vendor names. That could cause a disruption in the data set, for example being something from a vending machine is food but the vender name may not reflect not. What are at least 7 data elements that you think would need to be included? Briefly describe each and give an example of the data that might be stored.
1. Transaction Data - the time and date of said expense/income occurred 2. Amount - The dollar amount - said amount for expense, + for deposit or incoming income 3. Category - Type of transaction Food, Transportation, Entertainment, Shopping, Rent, Utilies, etc. 4. Payment Method - Method of payment Credit Card, Debit Card, Checking Account, Cash 6. Recurring Status - regular basis transaction or not 7. Budget - Create budgets for each category
Would you share this database with anyone else, who would that be? I personally wouldn't because I don't need to share it with anyone. Someone will a spouse or businessman would want an account in on it for transparency.
Do you think there are any data elements that might be duplicated, which ones? Vendor names, but that an easy fix that can be labeled to the correct thing to prevent it from happening again in the database.
Is any of the data sensitive to you, your family, or anyone else? What would be your privacy concerns for the data?
All financial data is sensitive, therefore if I or anyone were to use this it would be sensitive to all. I would advise everyone to have encryption in if the dataset were stored online. Something I do when using my debit card is using apple pay because Capital One generates different numbers on the transaction and not the real 16 digits to my debit card."
- Try to rephrase the problem that in the response above describing to ensure you understand it OR ask clarification questions to further your understanding of the problem at hand.
- Based on the data elements that the response is described, what types of data would you expect to be stored in the database?
- What concerns would you have about having multiple users sharing the same database?
- How would you organize the data elements that they mentioned? Would you have everything in one table, two tables, etc? How would you handle creating unique records in the table? What would your primary key(s) be?
