A researcher wants to validate a stress-induction procedure, to determine that their technique really does produce different levels of stress. The researcher had participants undergo three different kinds of stressful tasks: giving a memorized speech to a camcorder and being told that a group of people are watching the recording live; giving a memorized speech to a camcorder and being told that it is being recorded but will not be viewed by anyone else; or giving a memorized speech to a camcorder and being told that the camcorder is not recording. Each participant receives each kind of task on different days, counterbalanced for order. Their galvanic skin response (GSR) was recorded, which measures the electrical signals of the skin in units called microSiemens. Higher signals indicate greater arousal or stress.
