What is police use of force?

Use of force can be defined by way of the techniques officers use to de-escalate a situation.The force can be used by way of physical restraint, weapons whether a gun or taser or even chemically by the use of a pepper spray.

Why do police use force?

Officers use force when their de-escalation efforts by way of tryingto "talk down" the offenders are not effective.

When can police use deadly force?

Officers sometime have no choice but to use forms of force because of the situation they are in which could be with an offender presenting a weapon or if the call that they are responding to is already a violent scene and they need to use force immediately as to protect others present.

Do police have to be aware of others approaching when they are on a scene that is dangerous already?

Officers have to be aware of the entire area around them at all times.While they may be facing one offender there could be multiple around them as well as those that may view the scene and want to defend the offender without knowing exactly what has occurred.

Even though Karla was trying to de-escalate the scene with the man in the pick-up truck, what happened?What did she say afterward?

The first thing that struck me was that she said, "I killed him," she sounded very upset.Then when she said "I didn't want to die" in response to why she shot.This is a situation that officers find themselves in and it made it real for her.

Was the outcome of each situation ultimately in the control of the suspect or the officer in the scenarios? Explain.

I feel as though it was the officer that controlled the scenarios.With the simulator being reactionary to the officer and their commands the ultimate resolution was dependent on the way in which they portrayed themselves in each scenario.

What lessons did you learn from watching the training? Did you feel calm or nervous when watching the scenarios?

My first take away from the video was that this would be beneficial for not only officers but community members as a whole across the country. It would be a great teaching tool for the younger generation to see what they could face and how their decisions and demeanor can alter situations if confronted by officers. It made the situations officers are in more realistic.I was nervous watching them wondering what the outcome would be and if I would react in the same way.
