What is the record retention law in your workplace? Compare and contrast this law with the record
Question:
What is the record retention law in your workplace? Compare and contrast this law with the record retention policies of your state or country. If you work for the state, please compare your record retention policies to the federal guidelines. If they are different how is that justified?
This lesson addresses a topic that at first may not be that important to the every-day operations of a laboratory – record retention. Record retention usually follows a set policy that the laboratory, institution, or company has established but in many instances also has to adhere to state and federal policies regarding the retention of records. In many cases, the specific policies of a laboratory are more stringent than what is required by the state – records are retained longer. Record retention can provide important information about a past analysis, patient, case, etc. to investigators and all other personnel, especially when it comes to additional evidence being presented or if safety issues arise.
The assignment asks you to post record retention policies of your workplace on the discussion board and compare/contrast it with the record retention policies of your state or country for these specific types of records. If you do not work in a laboratory there may be other records that are kept for a specific amount of time – such as patient records, client files, student files, etc. You should summarize both your workplace and state/country retention policies briefly in your own words and provide appropriate references at the end. If you work for the state, please compare the state guidelines to federal guidelines.
