The four horsemen of the apocalypse as identified by John Gottman are the four terms which are problematic issues that affect communication. They are:

1. Criticism Stating or showing disapproval of ones behavior (i.e., mistakes, faults, etc.).

2. Contempt conveys insults, sarcasm, and mockery.

3. Defensive how one protects their actions/words and/or rationalizes behavior.

4. Stonewalling Avoiding

How I have used the four horsemen when communicating with others:

1. When it comes to criticism, I tend to shoot straight from the hip and verbalize the issue. If it continues, they my hands go up in the air; and if you know me well enough, you should quickly end scene; and exit stage left.

2. Contempt I tend to be extremely sarcastic to the point most find it difficult to determine whether I am kidding or serious for the most part my sarcasm is harmless. One time I was sitting in collegiate math class; and the professor was distributing our weekly quiz which I hated. As he distributed them, he said, Here are your quizzies. Thinking I was speaking inaudibly to myself, I replied, If these are your quizzies, I would hate to see your testies. Oh my god, he heard me and looked sternly at me holding his gaze for a moment and then he and those seated immediately around me began laughing out loud. Suffice it to say, because of my sarcasm, he never used the term quizzie again.

3. Defensive I am a retired defense paralegal of 35 years to say the least If I so choose, I can argue anyone down this can be very bad because when I believe in something I stand firmly on that believe and will defend it until you are tired or convinced whichever comes first. As I get older, defending or having the last word is no important.

4. Stonewalling I am that person who can walk/live around you as though you are just another piece of furniture in the house. Sadly, although effective at times, it can be very hurtful, even to the person who has caused me pain.
