Because new accounting scenarios always present themselves as a result of different trends, ideas, and improved efficiency, GASB must stay at the forefront and weigh in on the emerging issues. They also have to consider how the application of new ideas and financial instruments may impact already existing standards and make adjustments to previously enacted directives as necessary. GASB's mission is to establish and improve standards of state and local governmental accounting and financial reporting. In order to improve, they must continually review, stay relevant, and keep standards current to reflect changes in the governmental accounting environment.
