What lesson plan can I do using this reading strategy "story maps" for high school english class reading "Of Mice and Men"

Story maps are used to raise students awareness of the elements the author uses to construct the story. The story grammar that students are mapping out include the setting, characters, plot/problem, important events, outcome, and theme.

Students will be given a printable story map that they will fill in as they read. They will be given a true or fictional story that they will read on their own. As they read they will fill out the worksheet. Once all students have finished reading and writing, they will talk to the members in their groups about what they learned. They will be given 5 minutes to talk together. After the 5 minutes is up, the whole class will come together to fill out a story map as a class. Each group will be required to speak up and talk about a specific section on the map.

In my high school culinary classroom I would use the story map like this:

Each student will be given the same culinary case study about the E-coli outbreak at Jack in the Box. Students will read to themselves and fill out the study map. Once they have finished reading and writing they will work at their tables with their peers and talk about the article and what they put on their worksheet.

When the tables are finished talking, they will each talk to the class about a specific part of the map. Table 1 will talk about the setting and characters. Table 2 will talk about the problem. Table 3 will talk about the important events. Table 4 will talk about the outcome. And table 5 will talk about the theme. As each group shares, I as the teacher will be filling in a class story map on the screen.

Read: Case Study

Write: Story Map

Social Interaction: Talking to their peers about what they learned while reading the case study and filling out the story map.
