What was supposed to be a simulation soon became all too real when it was found that the guards were becoming tough and/or abusive and some of the prisoners had begun to display genuine signs of distress. "...three prisoners had become so traumatized that they were released. Over the course of the experiment, some of the guards became cruel and tyrannical, while a number of the prisoners became depressed and disoriented" (The Editors of Encylopaedia Britannica, 2025). As a result, the experiment became well known and "...immediately came under attack on methodological and ethical grounds" (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2025). It wasn't until one of the almost fifty outside observers questioned the morality of the experiment that Zimbardo decided to end the experiment only a week after it had started. It was supposed to last two weeks. Needless to say, Zimbardo's experiment was a testament to how human behavior can easily be impacted by a certain environment and ever since, the experiment has often been used as a basis for attempts to change the way correctional institutions are ran.
