Question:
What were the specific dilemmas the Duke LaCrosse team players (collectively, and then those of the three defendants) faced? Briefly explain the values reflected.
One dilemma they faced as a collective was, "Should they speak on the whole situation or should they wait until all accusations are proven right or wrong." Many of the players had to deal with a lot of pressure from the media. People went far as to believe that it was racially motivated. Many people on the team preferred to stay quiet but, unfortunately, Ryan Mcfadyen spoke on it aggressively through an email that forced their coach to resign (which eventually had their season canceled). The email alone ignited the media to believe that they were all indeed guilty.
The three individuals were faced with the dilemma, "Should they stand their ground and fight for their innocence or should they give up all hope since most people believe they are, without a doubt, guilty." The odds were completely against them. Especially due to the fact that Nifong was already bending the truth in his favor. If their lawyers could not somehow prove their innocence, they would be forced to give in to the lies of the accuser and the prosecutor. Not only would they have had to give in, but it would only make it look like they were lying the entire time. That alone would have made it tougher for them to fight back if they had no evidence.
The two values that were shown here were courage and integrity. David Evans had the courage to speak on behalf of his team to make a strong claim stating their innocence. With everyone believing they were guilty, he was able to stand up in front of the media and tell them all that they were wrong. With integrity, they made a consistent claim and never faltered in their innocence. They did not even feel the need to lie in order to help their case in winning. They fought with nothing but courage and integrity.
