A temporary worker, according to the movie "A Day's Work", is the employee who is employed and on payroll of an outside agency or, in other words, an employee who is not employed by the company who is using your services. The problem with this is that when a temp worker is hired to work, the staffing agency is not in direct control of the working conditions, the machinery or training process the worker would have to go through: therefore, it is not oftentimes aware of the hazardous conditions the employee has to face. Additionally, since the company in need of the labor does not have any real obligations to the employee, the employer does not provide training and there is not a real relationship between the two, which makes temp workers exposed to high risks. What made Day so vulnerable as a contingent worker was the way he was hired and trained. The process was so rushed and informal that it is clear that his safety was not a priority on the side of the staffing agency. He was called to start at Bacardi on the same day he would start and received a 15 minute training video before starting his shift. Furthermore, when the issue was raised with the palletizer, it was not okay for them to call a temp worker that had no idea how to safely operate such a dangerous machinery. My recommendation to the Director of Staffing at Bacardi would be to go through an extensive training process for all new hires, temp workers or not, in order to ensure safety protocols are being understood and followed. All new hires working in factories should be trained and be aware of the safety law of the land when working with machinery, which is to make sure that machines are turned off and disconnected, also known as the Lockout/Tagout. It is very sad to know that preventable accidents like this occurred and continue to happening because safety measures are not followed. In addition, temp agencies should prioritize safety over profits and production.
