Question:
When a quartz (SiO2) crystal is pulverized to 5 μm particles a white powder is obtained. Do you expect any colour change if the particle size is further decreased to 10 nm? Do you expect any size effect on the properties of 10 nm SiO2 nanocrystals? (i.e. would they differ in any way from those of the micrometer sized particles shown below?). The band-gap of SiO2 is 7 eV (exciton Bohr radius 0.5 nm).
