A simple way to demonstrate how little information we actually take in about the world around us is to show pictures of different pennies and ask which one is accurate. Despite looking at pennies many thousands of times in our lives, most people find it very difficult to recall or recognize one accurately. The pictures for this demonstration can be obtained from the article that first reported this effect, by Nickerson and Adams (1979); similar pictures are also available on the web at

This demonstration does not tell us whether the limitation is in coding (how many features we encode originally) or storage/retrieval (how many features we can retrieve). Either way, it is a vivid demonstration of how we absorb much less information about our environments than we realize, illustrating the kinds of effects shown by research on change blindness.
