When designing a distribution center $($DC$),$ the main objectives for the interior layout are optimizing space utilization, reducing handling time, and facilitating smooth product flow. Key design considerations include the use of vertical space, minimizing aisle space, and employing direct product flows to enhance operational efficiency. Additionally, space allocation for order picking, receiving, and shipping is critical. Slotting principles, which involve the strategic placement of products based on factors like demand frequency and size, play a central role in achieving these objectives. This concept is extremely important to many DC managers because $$the cost of order picking is estimated to be as much as $55\%$ of the total warehouse operating expense$($Koster$,$ et al$.,2007).$ By positioning high$-$demand items closer to the shipping area and heavier items in locations that reduce handling effort, companies can improve order$-$picking efficiency.
