I want each student to start performing research, or to develop their own, for a workable financial model. This model will be used for the remainder of the class and it needs to be professional in nature and must have the ability to retain comparable categories from period over period.
For example, within the model you want to compare Year 1 metrics against Year 2 metrics and then have a column 3 which will be a variance column between either the +/- over the years.
I also want each student to 5-8 key financial metrics/ratios that will be used for the remainder of the project. You just need to list them here and you can choose what metrics, and how you define your model, after you read over the final project detail below.
Remember, I just want to see an example of the model you will be using and the 5-8 metrics listed for this week and this is non-graded.
- Listed below is the project that you will be working on for weeks 7 & 8 so please review and get accustomed as to what will be needed and please ask me questions.
- Remember for this project there will not be a right or wrong answer for the analysis outcomes and the deliverables. The goal is to develop the skills for financial statement analysis, development, outcomes, using white papers, and understanding the reasons and goals of statement analysis and building and using the necessary tool.
The project will be scenario based in nature in which the company, United Technologies (UTX) will be researched, investigated and analyzed based upon mock buyout bids for divisions and then the company. The student will first analyze and understand the company's financial statements from 2016 and redevelop pro-forma financial statements based upon the scenarios, utilize their metrics to provide financial insight as to the positive/negative of the scenarios, and then develop white papers for recommendations based upon the numbers. The details of the project will be defined within Unit 6 along.
The student will then redevelop will redevelop the balance sheet and P/L with new data that will be provided at the start of week 7 & 8 by the professor based upon the bid offers for UTXs divisions and then the company within week 8. The student will state the financial impact, pro-forma, and then develop financial metrics, within a professional financial format/template model, that provides key figures insight to senior management. They will also provide white papers to provide recommendations to senior management based upon their findings as go or no-go for the buyout.
The student will be provided with all of the data and there is not any right or wrong answer because the goal in this project is to develop critical thinking skills on a much deeper level where the student can research financial data, develop financial tools, and provide sound financial recommendations based upon real world scenarios and data that could occur at any point in time.
