Communication in project management refers to the sharing of ideas and opinions between professionals who are working on similar or related tasks. [1] Project managers prioritize communication because it ensures that each professional working on the project is aware of the goals and expectations. This helps professionals to perform more efficiently and can improve their quality of work. [1] Because project teams are often form multidisciplinary backgrounds and skills, communication is crucial in order to keep each professional informed and on-task. Communication takes on forms in many methods such as non-verbal (email, messaging apps such as Teams, written correspondence) as well as verbally through direct interaction amongst conversations, phone calls, meetings, and presentations. Communication barriers can include selective perception, information overload, emotional disconnects, lack of source familiarity or credibility, workplace gossip, semantics, differences in meaning between sender and receiver, and biased language. [2] A disconnect I've noticed in the recent couple of years during video meetings is the lack of concentration/participation. This is something I'm guilty of from time to time when working from home as it's much easier to perhaps disengage slightly as opposed to an in-person meeting, hurting the overall flow and effectiveness.
