HIS 227: Islamic Civilizations & Muslim Media/Source Analysis Project: Short essay (3-4 p., double-spaced, 12 pt. standard font) describing and analyzing representations of Islam, Muslims, and their history in media (film, TV, newspaper, music, website, etc) OR literary source (e.g., novel, memoir, short story). Topic proposal is due on Brightspace on Friday 1 1/ 1 by 5PM. The proposal should identify and briefly describe the proposed source, state the focus (section, theme, character, motif, etc). Proposals should be a paragraph (half a page maximum) and are ungraded, but you must turn it in and receive approval. The following week you will receive an email confirming whether your proposed source and topic is appropriate for the assignment, and possibly brief suggestions. Essays are due Friday 1 1/15 on Brightspace. If you want to discuss your project with one of us, email Instructor and TA at least a week before the essay deadline to request an appointment. For extension requests, also email us at least a week ahead of time with your proposed submission date. Late submissions without extensions may be marked down. Failure to submit a proposal will result in a grade reduction. Topics: Be creative in selecting your source, but whatever you choose should be a widely-circulated media or literary text that represents Islam and Muslims historically or in the contemporary period. Your task will be to analyze how these representations reflect and shape current or historical understandings of Islam and Muslims. Sources for the project can be either produced by non-Muslims or Muslims, in the Muslim world or elsewhere, and can be print, audio, video, or electronic. For media: newspapers, periodicals, popular music, comic, films, television, advertisements, websites, video games, etc. For literary sources: novel, short story, poetry, memoir, etc - some examples include primary sources we have read for class (see items on syllabus with asterisk, eg, Li & Luckert stories, Rumi poetry, al-Baladhuri history, Bernier travel account), or other published sources such as Haley's Malcolm X Autobiography (which we will read part of later), Kane's Ambiguous Adventure, or Knight's Taqwacores (both novels available in the library). It is also possible to look at works of visual or performing art; contact TA and Instructor with any questions. If you choose something that is not a single compact textual source, explain what materials you will draw from (specific sections or aspects). Make sure to choose a source for which you can present some consideration of relevant contexts (political, religious, economic, historical) which shape the representation; do not select something for which you cannot determine the place and time of its production or make an informed speculation about the potential audience. Do not try to take on too broad of a topic ('Muslims in the New York Times', all of Shakespeare plays, the whole Marvel Universe), since you will be forced to over-generalize. Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria: Projects should reflect an awareness and understanding of class readings and discussions. You are not required to refer to scholarly sources, though this might be useful (such as a reference to Lapidus or another source for a historical text). Projects should interpret representations of Islam and Muslims in light of the contexts in which they are produced, and the political and cultural implications of these media or textual forms. Each paper must have an argument, and should contain the following elements: 1. Short introduction and conclusion. 2. Description of the material(s) you are discussing. In a few sentences (no more than half a page) convey a sense of the form and content of your sources to the reader. Brief consideration of conditions of production or context. 3. Clarification of the way the source is relevant and significant as a representation of Islam or Muslims. 4. The most important and substantial part of the paper is analysis of how Islam or Muslims are represented in the source in relation to context. Discuss why the source presents a particular representation (avoid excessive speculation, but you can discuss the possible agendas of the producers of the source). 5. Include an 'archive' of your sources (weblink to text, video or audio; very brief scanned pages or images from your source; include with your Brightspace submission of final essay). ACADEMIC HONESTY: Essay content must come from assigned sources (cited when drawn from) and your own ideas and argumentation. The public internet and generative Al are not acceptable or effective resources for preparing answers. You are not permitted to use generative Al in any way for this class. Pasting web content or evidence of generative LLM Al (including GPT, Bard, Grammarly, and anything else the produces, writes, or re-writes content) use in any capacity is a violation of academic honesty policies, as is obtaining help from others on your assignments, including collaboration with classmates on content. Violation of academic integrity or honesty policies may result in failure of the course. For this assignment, and all other written work in this class, you are required to save multiple stages of your work (outline, fir draft, and an earlier revision at minimum; with time-stamps if possible). To do this, you can either save intermediate versions manually with new file names, or automate by turning on version history or the equivalent in your word processing program. You only need to submit the final draft - keep the other versions on file in case needed
