Week 1 Assignment

This weeks assignment, due Friday of week 1, will require the use of a Word document. Use the example given at the bottom of these instructions as a template. Some items have current uses in the U.S. and some do not, so be certain to look each one up. The first one, smallpox is done for you as an example.

Include an APA formatted cover page/title page noting on the upper 1/3 of the page the title of your project, author (your name) and name of the college. Then click the enter button until another page opens. On the second page, you will begin the body of the paper which includes the next element, the document.

As a word document, list the characteristics of the relevant biochemical, chemical or toxin agents. Please use size 12 Arial font and single spacing. An example of the relevant topics to include in this assignment is listed on the course homepage, however, the topics are listed below. A brief description of each category is needed to fulfill the necessary criteria for each agent:

2. Classification or Physical Characteristics

If it is an organism reference it as a bacterium, virus, parasite, protozoa, etc. Be specificfor example use enveloped DNA virus or gram-positive cocci. If a toxin, reference it as a gas, liquid, and anything else that gives it unique qualities such as its odor, color, etc.

3. Natural Host

Tick, bat, mouse, humans, etc.

4. Historical Use

Used in war, conflict, terrorist attack, etc.

5. Current Use

U.S. for agriculture, production, research, etc.

6. Transmission

Vector, food, human contact, etc.

7. Incubation Period

How long does it take to replicate before signs and symptoms develop?

8. Human Signs and Symptoms

Self-explanatory

9. Mortality Rate

Please provide a percentage or death rate if one is available. Use low or high if no numbers are available.

10. Treatment Protocol

How do we treat this with standard medical protocols? Be specific"antibiotics is not a sufficient explanation but intravenous fluoroquinolone is specific.
