WK Collaboration: Devotional
Matthew :
The parable of the talents unfolds into a great story about the expectations of owners and their expected returns. It would seem in this story Jesus is conveying the truth that investments are expected to grow. Jesus introduces the time value of money concept to us What we are given today is expected to increase based upon this concept. This is true for our talents and abilities as well as our investments.
In the parable, the three examples are based upon an investment of five, two, and one. The expectations of increase were not equal returns. We know that risk is a factor anytime investments are considered. The owner in this parable was not concerned about risk. He believed that investing in something is better than laziness and avoidance. If he would have been concerned about risk, he would not have been so disappointed in the servant that buried the talent. It would seem that the process of investing is more valuable than complacency and the risk will mitigate itself in the end.
As we consider how to apply this truth to our lives, we can be assured that God expects the increase in our life. We must cultivate our talents and abilities and not be complacent about pursuing our calling. The risk lies not in our pursuit but in the lack of pursuing.
