The task is to calculate the settlements for a construction on clay that is improved by limecement columns. You have learned from the Foundation Engineering course that it is possible to optimise the construction by using a rather high area replacement ratio where the soil properties are rather poor. In the construction, as described in the figure below, every second column is installed down to $5$ m depth, and every other column down to $10$ m depth. The diameter of the columns is $600$ mm and the centre distance is $1\mathrm{.}0$ m $.$ The width of the construction is $10$ m and the length is considered as very large. The ground water table is located at the ground surface.
