Workshop Three - 3.4 Dropbox Retention Intervention Introduction and Alignment This individual assignment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to learn about "ways to navigate the employer-employee relation aspects such as retaining and engaging talented employees" (Clawson & Haskins, 2011, abstract). Employee retention is an important aspect of the role of human resource managers. The costs of high turnover can result in reduced profits for an organization due to the costs of hiring and training new staff as well as the costs of lower productivity. On the flip side, employees who are committed to the organization, who also have high motivation and on-the-job engagement, can substantially add to the bottom line while bringing a whole new dynamism to the company's culture. You will read the article, "Career COMPASS: Navigating Key Aspects of Employer-Employee Relationships," written by Clawson and Haskins (2011) and complete the COMPASS Employee Career Management Form. The individual paper will include a summary of results from the COMPASS form as well as a critique of both the article and the COMPASS framework. The findings will be submitted in a paper that is 600-900 words in length. Note: One additional benefit of this assignment is that it will allow teams to individually gather data, and obtain credit for the research, that could very well serve the needs of the team project assignment: Comprehensive Recruitment Plan Presentation. Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to: Workforce Planning and Talent Management: Explain the concept of labor supply and demand and describe how such programs as forecasting, retention, and succession planning ensure the workforce's ability to achieve the organization's goals and objectives. Resources Textbook: Human Resource Management Article: Career COMPASS: Navigating Key Aspects ofEmployer-Employee Relationships Background Information Employers need to address employee lifecycle career management issues. Most notably, promotions can provide opportunities to reward exceptional performance, and to fill open positions with tested and loyal employees. Several decisions loom large in any firm's promotion process. Is seniority or competence the rule? How should we measure competence? Is the process formal or informal? Vertical, horizontal, or other? Women and people of color still experience relatively less career progress in organizations, and bias and more subtle barriers are often the cause. In general, the employer's promotion processes must comply with all the same antidiscrimination laws as do procedures for recruiting and selecting employees or any other HR actions. Transfers and retirements are other important career lifecycle issues.
