Here are the requirements for this paper: 1. Pick a case study for development/globalization. This could be a historical or contemporary process of globalization or development that interests you but it needs to be a specific case study within a specific place (this could be at the national, regional, or local level) and during a specific time period. Before you go any further, ensure there is enough literature on your topic to draw from. You could pick something related to politics, economics, culture, gender, the environment, resource extraction or enclosure, labor, agriculture, culture, tourism, etc. A quick internet search of popular websites like National Public Radio, the New York Times, National Geographic, Nature, and Science can help if you are struggling to pick a topic. You might look at local news sources if you would like to identify an issue close to home. | am available to meet with you if you are struggling to come up with a topic or if you want to know if you are headed in the right direction. 2. Research the issue! The goal of this research should be twofold. 1. You should familiarize yourself with your case study and 2. you should gather some kind of empirical data and information related to your case study. This data can come from non-scholarly sources. 3. Utilize at least 1 of the theoretical perspectives or 1 of the authors addressed within this class to analyze and assess your case study. You should use the perspective to help identity the social relationships and actors that contribute, shape, create and/or drive the dimension or problem your are studying. Or you could compare and contrast how two different theories might understand and interpret a case study, identifying the strengths and limitations of both perspectives. You could also create a synthesis of two perspectives in order to strengthen your analysis, identifying how the combination of two perspectives could strengthen an analysis. For example, | might choose to look at a particular case of gold mining in Papua New Guinea by a Canadian company and use the arguments of Hickel and dependency theorists alongside some economic data to outline the transfer of wealth from a core nation to a peripheral nation. Alternatively, | might use Rostow, Hickel/dependency theorists, and Esteva to make different arguments about how to understand this case study within the literature on development, comparing and contrasting how each theorist might interpret it. Or | might use some of the literature from our week on gender alongside some data to examine whether or not there are uneven effects of the mining felt by different populations that cut along the lines of gender. 4. Structure your paper with an introduction that orients the reader to your argument and provides an overview to the paper, then briefly!! introduce the theory/ies or arguments from the course that you will be using. Then, introduce your case study, laying out its connections to the study of globalization and development. Finally, use the theory/(ies) or argument/s to analyze the case study (this section should be the bulk of your paper. Aim to make this section 2/4 pages). End with a conclusion that summarizes your paper. 5. Include in-text references for everything and anything you draw upon and use for evidence throughout your paper. Remember to put direct quotations in quotation marks. Use APA citations, and cite all your sources. If you cite a source without a direct quotation, use this style: (Du Bois 1992). If you are cite a direct quotation, use this style: (Downey, Bonds and Clark 2010: 310). If you draw on multiple sources, use a serial reference like (Gould et al. 2004; Schnaiberg 1980). 6. Finally, include a bibliography.
