The American Dream Goes to College: The Cinematic Student Athletes of College Football
The article highlights the Athletic American Dream and how this was portrayed in cinema between the years 1920 and 1980. The article talks about how many of the cinema workpieces revolve around sport teams who start as underdogs and work their way to build a championship team where all players unite and chase one goal which is a championship. This is very stereotypical because when you watch sports movies, the stereotype is that the movie will be about a player (who is having issues with his personal life aside from the sport) and the team (who is a very poor program) and how through team building the player (protagonist) gets his life together and at the same the team begins to succeed. Yet, in these movies, more times than not the team who is focused on during the film, falls short and learns a life lesson from playing the game they love.
The article also evaluates how many of these movies (especially football) takes place in college, where only 16 percent of Americans had attended up until the 1940's. Since college football was so important and popular in our pop-culture, many directors and script writers would use college setting to promote and market college to the rest of Americans using football. It would portray college as a time to party and have fun while playing football and attending classes. Though, most movies did not focus on the education part, it certainly highlighted the fun that came with college football and completing the Athletic American Dream.
