In either case, you will work out a preliminary research question $($which needs to be both interesting and feasible in the context of a Master Thesis!$),$identify some relevant references, define what data you wish to analyze and how to get it $($demonstrate feasibility!$)$ and describe how you wish to analyze it$.$
