Food Department Manager - Woolworths

As the largest retail grocery firm in Australia, Woolworths offer many job opportunities for people across the country to jointly expand the business (Woolworths Group, 2024). Therefore, it is vital to recruit different levels of managers to different areas within the cooperation, with required sets of skills for the roles. According to Woolworths Supermarkets (2024), a department manager at Woolworths is responsible for general store operational duties, managing entry-level employees and delivering extraordinary customer service, with the vision to generate greater profitability. To achieve those, positioning essential managerial roles for front-line managers is closely monitored, including technical, human, and conceptual skills, as stated by Williams et al., (2023).

Technical skills refer to the manager's distinctive expertise and knowledge to perform specific duties and tasks (Williams et al., 2023). As indicated by Woolworths Group (2024), a department manager at Woolworths is expected to fully comprehend thestore standards in Food Safety, Safety and Merchandising Standards. They must also be proficient in technology to plan for sales and events, manage inventory and track employees' performance to at least fulfil the customers' demands.

Human skills refer to the manager's interpersonal skills working with other employees (Williams et al., 2023). Department managers will need to perform teamwork excellently, be able to communicate thoroughly for conflict resolution and staff motivation in the team (Woolworths Group, 2024). These skill sets enable the managers to build a positive workplace environment and ameliorate employees' satisfaction.

Conceptual skills refer to the manager's strategic ability to resolve problems by addressing and evaluating different situation outcomes within an organisation (Williams et al., 2023). Therefore, problem solving, strategic planning and decision making are required skill sets that a department manager at Woolworths must acquire.

Throughout my academic journey at Deakin for over a year, starting from Foundation Program to Diploma of Commerce, I have gained relevant skills for the role of a Department Manager at Woolworths. Innovatively, Deakin College has enabled me to engage with, utilise, and integrate technology into my daily academic activities, especially in two core units, namely Information Technology and Business Analytics. When it comes to the job, I am well capable of using MS Word and Excel for operational planning, inventory tracking and staff productivity management., which correspond to the technical skills of a first-line manager.

Besides class time, my working experience in retail, hospitality and customer service has facilitated my interpersonal skills to become a reliable and communicative individual. Practically, I have learnt about customer engagement, conflict resolution and teamwork, which are highly useful in leading a diverse team in daily operation as a department manager at Woolworths. Being a student mentor at Deakin College has also encouraged me to confidently express my opinions through persuasive conversing that contributes to the team output and motivates the people around.

Last but not least, being a team leader in the most recent Management project has sharpened my conceptual skills and developed my personal qualities to become a manager. The team struggled to decide a mutual time for a group meeting due to different schedules. I came up with the idea of making a detailed outline for each part, allocate each section to every member then bring them all to the project slides. We then finished our tasks on time and got distinction grades for our assignment.
