Assignments requirements :
You have been hired by UBS after graduating from University with your degree. Your boss has asked you to prepare and present at a meeting for wealthy but knowledgeable clients. The title of your presentation is to explain "NAFTA - USMCA - Is there a difference - Winners and loser! ".
The requirements are:
- Give the background of NAFTA, its origins briefly, and key issues which affected the economies of three countries of North America. This should show economic consequences especially on US and Mexico such as the trade deficit and the perceived loss of manufacturing jobs in US.
- Evaluate the success of NAFTA and consequences. Are the loss of manufacturing jobs in US due to NAFTA?
- Explain the new treaty, USMCA, and the differences to NAFTA. Who are winners and losers in North America (countries/regions/sectors) and in wider world. Is it likely some production will leave North America completely? From an economic perspective, is USMCA better for Americans?
- Demonstrate your knowledge of concepts such as globalization, trade deficit, currencies, current and capital accounts and trade wars in the assignment. You may use balance of payments (BOP) to support your argument / idea ( it will be great).
- Use and include ( if possible ) trade deficit chart/s to better support your ideas.
- Demonstrate your ability to link economic concepts and look at the bigger picture. A good example is tariffs put in place in one place can slow down economic growth in another corner of the globe, yet countries such as the US are using them as a weapon.
-Summarise your views on development in USMCA in near future and the impact on the respective economies and highlighting winners and losers. There is no correct answer. What we want to see is an ability to summarise your thinking in logical manner.
