Media coverage has always been one of the most influential parts of an election, whether it be from campaign ads or news outlets. Today's media environment is similar in that political opponents' ads target each other, albeit more harshly today (as we saw with this last election) than in the past. Another similarity is that interviews can be used out of context. News outlets and political opponents do this all the time. Some differences, though, are that with the introduction of social media in the last 20 years, people have been getting information at a much faster pace. Social media also has a significant influence on elections, as seen with Musk's acquisition of Twitter, which led to a substantial right-wing echo chamber that may have influenced many undecided voters to vote red. You also have the president constantly posting things online, and news outlets reporting on them the second they get posted. The media environment is a lot more fast-paced than it was in 1972, which can be overwhelming for some people
