Example: Dizzy apes provide clues on human need for mind altering experiences Date: March 13, 2023 URL: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/03/230313215023.htm Summary: In this study, researchers suggest that apes will intentionally spin themselves until they become dizzy. This may reflect their desire for an altered state of consciousness. The researchers studied videos of apes spinning and then simulated it themselves and found that this spinning caused dizziness. I find this research fascinating because it means that the human family has always had a need for altered states of consciousness. It is not just modern humans who seek this out, which can lead to substance abuse.
