EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS IN YOUR TEXTBOOK OR THIS CASE STUDY CASE: Valley High School in Ladysmith, B.C. is unique in the Cowichan Valley School District. We CASE: Valley High School in Ladysmith, B.C. is unique in the Cowichan Valley School District. We are the only rural school, with students attending our school from a 75-square km radius. Our building houses grades 7 - 12, but is relatively small. Our total student body numbers approximately 500 students. Because of this small size, acquiring financial resources is difficult for us. While our funding per student is the same as the rest of the district, we have fewer students (the average is 750 students per school); therefore, our total dollars are less. We must seek funding from other sources in order to ensure the same quality of education in our school as those in the remainder of the district. With regard to Canadian Science and Technology Standards, Valley High School is highly motivated to reform their Science and Technology Department. At present, our S&T Department has very limited technological resources. We only have one set of equipment that can be used for science and web design purposes. Funding from the Excellence in Science and Technology Grant would greatly enhance our ability to move towards meeting the Global Science and Technology Content Standards for our district. The funds of $75,000, if approved, will be used to purchase equipment and tools to foster learning in our science laboratory, an introduction to web design (basic level), training for teachers, new curriculum for students, and to provide analysis of student progress. With a new Microcomputer Based Laboratory (MBL), students can perform sophisticated scientific experiments, collect and manipulate digital data, share their findings with classmates, and complete in-depth analysis of natural phenomena including marine biology harvested from the local beaches. The lab would also foster a Basic Web Design course so students will eventually learn how to create their own webpages. In order to expand the technology capabilities in our school, this project will include purchasing new computers, a server, provide teacher training, revised curriculum, and complete the wiring of the science/computer lab to accommodate this set-up. The improvements will also include the purchase of added furniture necessary to most efficiently use the allotted space. This project would allow for 10 stations of 3-4 students each to participate in the same learning experience and share the data among networked computers. There will also be an identical master station for the teacher to accommodate student instruction. Imagine you are a member of the high school staff as a Science and Technology Teacher, who has just graduated from BCIT. You want to submit a short memo report to the Excellence in Science and Technology Grant Committee's Dr. Santa Clause which outlines the needs of your high school and why you feel your school qualifies for this grant/funding (persuade the Committee your school is deserving of this grant). You want to build your case and tie the school statistics and current situation in with your recommendations of tech-stations and other enhancements (above) so you have a better chance at getting your letter report/proposal approved.
