Write: Close Reading Journal At 10 Points Possible Due: Wed Sep 11, 2024 11:59pm Attempt 1 In Progress NEXT UP: Submit Assignment El Add Comment Below are some reading strategies that will help you gain a better understanding of the text you're writing about. You can use this exercise for any future papers or projects that require you to do a close reading of a text. This exercise would be a great pre-writing prompt or could be used to generate more ideas during the outlining or drafting stages of your writing. After thoroughly reading your chosen text about dumpster living, answer the following questions, writing 1-2 sentences per bullet point: 1. Summarize (Retell the text's main ideas in your own words) 2. Question (Challenge the ideas or purpose of a text or your own understanding of the text, ask interpretive questions like "How? Why?" or ask a speculative question like "I wonder if... I am curious about...") 3. Clarify (Define an idea or a term, explain a confusing or difficult part of the text, explain a reference you were unfamiliar with, or offer an insight such as "When I began viewing this, I thought... Now that I have seen this part, I realize...") 4. Synthesize (Connect an idea in the text with ideas you have encountered from other class readings, other courses, prior learning, something you read in the news, etc. For example, "This reminds me of..." or "This works against the idea that...") 5. Respond (React to the text. Your response can be personal or analytical. You might want to respond to interesting ideas, the author's claims, provocative statements, the author's use of facts or emotional arguments, etc.) [Adapted by Cory Teubner from AVID AHE: Reciprocal Viewing Handout] Submit Assignment Next > 9:01 PM Q Search 9/8/2024
