Purpose

The ability to remember events is influenced by many factors, including the importance of the event, the emotional content of the event, and the personal relevance of the event. However, convincing evidence for the claim that emotional events tend to be better remembered than emotionally neutral events mainly from research on autobiographical memory. The present study was designed to examine whether the performance on episodic memory task is affected by the emotionality of the material.

Material:

For the study, we showed the participants different kinds of pictures: Some of the pictures are emotionally positive (e.g., happy puppy), some are emotionally negative (injured people) and some are neutral pictures. The valence of these pictures is the most critical independent variable of the experiment. After viewing a series of pictures, we assessed your memory for those pictures, and your score on memory test is the most critical dependent variable of the experiment. Consistent with previous research and widespread assumptions, we hypothesized that memory would be higher for emotional pictures compared to the neutral pictures.
